Drainage is simply the natural or artificial removal of surface and sub surface water from a particular area. Many types of soils require enhanced drainage to allow crops or plants to grow properly or to manage water supplies.

Soils that are otherwise excellent may be waterlogged for a week of the year, which is sufficient to kill certain plants unless proper drainage is established.
